Job Description:
The Nuclear Medicine Technologist is responsible for the
ordering, preparation and administration of radiopharmaceutical
materials to patients. The Nuclear Medicine Technologist operates
gamma equipment or thyroid uptake and probe for the visualization
for both the structure and function of major organ systems within
the body. The Nuclear Medicine Technologist utilizes knowledge of
radiation physics and safety in the preparation, measurement and
administration of isotopes.Essential Duties and
Responsibilities
- Performs a broad range of diagnostic imaging procedures
including SPECT.
- Prepares image data for interpretation including proper
documentation and labeling, image data processing and formatting,
data calculations and SPECT reconstruction.
- Practices within Federal and State guideline.
- Orders, receives, documents, stores and returns
radiopharmaceuticals in accordance with NY DOH.
- Prepares, documents, dispenses and administers
radiopharmaceuticals in accordance with NY DOH.
- Transfers and retrieves image data to PACS and Dynamics.
- Performs radioactive waste collection/disposal
- Performs a daily visual check of facilities and equipment for
safety and functionality.
- Prepares and maintains imaging rooms and equipment for safety
and readiness.
- Follows Radiation Safety ALARA concept and its relationship to
work procedures and work conditions.
- Performs and documents daily, weekly, monthly, and quarterly
quality control procedures on equipment. Reports deviations to
appropriate personnel.
- Troubleshoots minor equipment problems. Reports errors to
BioMed.
- Properly verifies the patient's identity by means of two forms
of identification.
- Properly reviews diagnostic orders in patient's chart for
testing.
- Demonstrates proficiency in starting intravenous catheter line
and injecting isotopes. Removes IVs.
- Screens female patients 55 years old or younger for pregnancy.
Screens for breastfeeding.
- Ensures correct and appropriate patient information throughout
patient encounter.
- Assists in the orientation of new personnel.
- Arranges and coordinates patient appointments and/or procedures
to ensure that the division maintains effective and efficient
workflow.
- Performs other tasks as required for the effective and
efficient functioning of the Practice when directed to do so by
Supervisory and Managerial personnel.
- Appropriately positions patient per protocol based on procedure
order.Qualifications
- Must be licensed by NYS DOH (L.N.M.T.)
- Graduate of an accredited program in Nuclear Medicine
Technology and board certified or board
- Certified or Registered NMT- American Registry of Radiologic
Technologists (RT, N) OR NuclearMedicine Technology Certification
Board (CNMT)
- Additional specific technical certifications, for example (NCT
or PET), a plus.
- Minimum Basic Life Support Certification.
- Must be IV certified or eligiblePhysical Requirements - Work is
generally active. Must be able to stand and / or sit for long
periods. - Must be able to assist patients on / off stretchers,
tables and wheelchairs as needed.
- Handles multiple conflicting priorities and interruptions to
routine.
- May be exposed to hazardous materials including
radiationSuccess Criteria
