Position Information Job Posting Number S00806 Position Title Dean for Academic Equity, Inclusion, and Success Department Office of Equity and Inclusion-1153 Job Category Staff Posting Position Type Full-Time The Office for Equity & Inclusion provides leadership and guidance to address systemic inequities for all members of the Wesleyan community. Their culture of inquiry approach to enhancing the educational living and learning experience is designed to promote a healthy, thriving campus climate and a community of excellence predicated on respect for others. Reporting to the Vice President for Equity & Inclusion, the Dean for Academic Access and Success promotes an inclusive educational environment through collaboration with students, faculty, staff, alumni, and other stakeholders to provide all students support and resources to achieve and thrive academically and beyond. The Dean provides educational opportunities that foster intercultural competencies to sustain a thriving educational environment, particularly for students from historically marginalized communities (including students of color, students with disabilities, first-generation college students, students from different socioeconomic backgrounds, queer, and Trans students, and international students). The Dean will develop programs that mitigate disparities in academic and vocational development outcomes for these students. Responsibilities include: SUPERVISION AND LEADERSHIP Leading a staff/faculty team to develop and implement programs and services that foster intercultural competencies, strengthen the undergraduate experience for historically marginalized students, and facilitates civic engagement. Creating and implementing institutional pipeline programs for traditionally marginalized students that ensures academic and vocational success from admissions to graduation. Overseeing the implementation of equity and inclusion training and initiatives in the natural sciences and mathematics. Coordinating institution-wide efforts to ensure equitable educational practices and opportunities for historically marginalized students and first-generation and low-income students. Hiring and supervising the Dwight Greene student intern for the Office for Equity & Inclusion. Collaborating with Institutional Research to assess institutional efforts to recruit and retain underrepresented students in STEM majors. Supervising the Director of the Upward Bound Program, the Associate Director of the McNair program, interns as needed, and assisting with grant compliance. DIVERSITY AND CROSS - CULTURAL Serving as a resource, advocate, and principal advisor on academic-related student diversity issues for the campus community, and specifically students from historically marginalized communities. Mentoring student-led initiatives that foster greater awareness and understanding of student identities. Supporting the planning and implementation of Mellon Mays Undergraduate Program, McNair Scholars Program, Upward Bound, WesMaSS, First Things First, and other targeted retention programs dedicated to First Generation, Low Income, and underrepresented students. Overseeing anti-bias educational efforts. Working closely with the Resource Center, Dean for Academic Advancement, Student Academic Resources, Class Deans, and the Office of International Student Affairs to provide student support. ADMINISTRATIVE Serving as an advocate and resource to students, staff, and faculty and facilitating referrals to appropriate academic and/or administrative departments. Developing and implementing major equity and inclusion of campus initiatives. Representing the Office for Equity & Inclusion on designated committees as assigned. Performing other duties as requested, supporting the mission of the University, and contributing to the programs and services offered by the Office for Equity & Inclusion. Other responsibilities including recruiting new fellows, budget management, assisting program alumni with graduate school applications, and collaborating with other programs and offices on and off-campus. Minimum Qualifications Master’s degree in Student Affairs Administration, College Counseling, Ethnic Studies or related field, and at least 4 years’ experience working in Multicultural/Diversity Affairs, Leadership/Student Development, Student Activities or similar field or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Deep knowledge of diversity, equity and inclusion matters. Demonstrated proficiency advancing efforts positively impacting individuals from historically underrepresented or underserved groups. Knowledge of Student Development Theory, Racial and Ethnic Identity Development, and Feminist, Queer, and Trans Theory. Proven leadership effectiveness, including the ability to relate and engage with all segments of campus. Ability to counsel, mentor, and assist Multicultural and LGBTQ populations with personal, academic, and other university concerns. Demonstrated competence working with a diverse student population. Ability to develop student metacognitive skills. Ability to work evenings and weekends. Excellent problem-solving, interpersonal, communication and organizational skills. Demonstrated strong computer competence, including but not limited to Microsoft Word, Excel, and social media and marketing mediums. Preferred Qualifications Enhanced understanding of grant writing and management. Experience in developing effective and inclusive STEM programs for historically marginalized students. Prior supervisory experience.
