Garnet Health Medical Center Middletown. ResponsibilitiesThe
Nursing Professional Development Practitioner develops and uses
tools, theories, skills and knowledge of NPD to improve the
practice of staff. The Scope and Standards of Nursing Professional
Development Practice describe key roles and responsibilities for
which the NPD Practitioner is accountable. They include:
- Learning facilitator. The NPD practitioner uses the educational
design process to bridge the knowledge, skills, and/or practice
gaps identified through needs assessment.
- Change agent. The NPD practitioner actively works to transform
processes at micro, meso-, and macro-system levels through
inspiration, initiation, adoption, and sustainment of and
adaptation to change using project management and improvement
processes.
- Mentor. The NPD practitioner advances the profession by
contributing to the professional development of others and
supporting life-long learning as individuals develop across
practice, professional and educational settings.
- Leader. The NPD Practitioner influences the interprofessional
practice and learning environments, the NPD specialty, the
profession of nursing, and healthcare.
- Champion of scientific inquiry. The NPD practitioner promotes
the generation and dissemination of new knowledge and the use of
evidence to advance NPD practice, guide clinical practice, and
improve patient care.
- Advocate for NPD specialty. The NPD practitioner actively
supports, promotes, and demonstrates nursing professional
development as a nursing practice specialty.
- Partner for practice transitions. The NPD practitioner supports
the transition of nurses and other healthcare team members across
learning and practice environments, roles, and professional
stages.
- Overall outputs of NPD practice are learning, change,
professional role competence and growth, which ultimately lead to
optimal patient care, population health, and protection of the

Education:
- Bachelor's degree in nursing required. Master's degree in
nursing / education / or Post-Master's certification in nursing
education preferred.Minimum Experience:
- 3 years' experience in nursing professional development in
either a hospital or academic setting, or demonstrated expertise in
a clinically equivalent role.Required Certification/Registration:
- Current New York State registered nurse license.
- BLS/ACLS provider status required, BLS/ACLS instructor status
required, or achieved within 2 years of date of hire, or date of
job description revision (5/13/22) - PALS provider status for
practitioners assigned to pediatric areas, i.e., Children's ED,
Pediatric Unit (5W), and ICU.
- ANCC Nursing Professional Development (NPD) certification
required, or achieved when ANCC eligibility criteria are met (4000
clinical practice hours).Physical Requirements:
- Travel to multiple facilities is required.Working Conditions:
- Environmental Demands and Exposure to Hazards: Works in a
clean, well- lighted, heated or ventilated facility. No routine
exposure to hazards.
- Physical Demands: Demonstrates physical and functional ability
to perform full anatomical range of motion to accomplish tasks.
Evidence of visual and aural acuity and finger and hand dexterity
to operate computer and office equipment. Can withstand long
periods of sitting, standing and/or constant walking. Ability to
lift 30 lbs.
- Mental Demands: Ability to foster collaborative relationships,
to work well under pressure, to organize and synthesize new
information, and prioritize tasks. Possesses critical thinking,
analytical skills and flexibility. Ability to multi-task. Required
detailed attention to work in an environment where interruptions
cannot be controlled. Demonstrates sensitivity to customer needs
and expectations. May be subject to irregular hours including
evenings or potentially weekends to participate in operational and
community events as necessary.
